digging with minnow: surfing and uptempo girl music
perhaps the first of who knows how many- (1/?)
surf vids
been watching a lot of surf videos. just rented a garage studio at the beach with my homie and we've surfing and bumming around the beach and bay a ton over the last month and a half.
personally i think surf lags behind the skate scene when it comes to making important videos. videos which convey more than just the sport itself. but i've been seeing a lot of sick stuff recently so I'd like to share.
survival stance - gliding barnacles 2025: i think he made this after an event of some kind but it doesn't matter at all. i'm such a fan of the track choice and visual effects. really tired of surf videos just being ultra hd mixes of long lens, swim shot, drone shot its refreshing to bring some psychedelia into the visuals and editing style. even if this vibes more like editing + vfx practice and less like a full video effort i want more and it inspires me to make weird videos.
CI - SPEARFISH: just discovered mikey feb's new production company Spearhead unlimited and i am fucking with the crew heavy. a release for CI is never going to be the most daring video but this one is just beautiful. big big props to the colorist and DP. i dont know if i've ever enjoyed a surfing drone shot before this. mikey filling up the frame on that left point break, board color popping off the backdrop. dreamy. lovely mix overall between long lens, drone, and water shots. original soundtrack sitting right in the pocket. and to top it all off mikey february taking a 5'5 fish to every part of the wave. dreamy.
alwaysdowhatyoushoulddo - adwysd and stüssy: found these boys for the first time this month and i'm a bit obsessed. reaching more into skate culture for this one and it lands nicely. and any opener with loukeman backing is gonna hook me.. you can really feel the influence in the editing style and like the context of the video itself. you and your crew on a trip filming all the time. they seem like aussie fun boys to hang with and they shred. perfect music selection all around. that boy with the hair needs to drop me a line if hes ever in ny..
skate vids
i mean of course i'm watching skate vids.. always cool stuff hitting the net.
Chase Walker - THE STARS OF MIDNIGHT: i can't really put my finger on one thing here but this video really clicked with me. plus that crazy quarter pipe on the sidewalk part.. just damn sick as hell. pretty classic skate video editing and cinematography but it scratches my brain nonetheless. and THEN they drop chicken fried by the zac brown band and this video is cemented
Sam Bolton - GS7 in Bolinas: more life vid than skate vid. but i got to see my favorite homos skimboarding and that means a lot to me.
GX1000 - GX1000: Willow Remix: to bring it all home, one of my favorite skaters right now. big fan of his style and spot selection. makes me want to go throw myself down the biggest hill i can find. also.. frontside air over the tree ?? come on
cartoons
put me on: mail@betweendirtandsea.com im a big vewn fan..
MTV's Downtown, Episode 01: Sin Bin: i cooled it after binging 6 (?) episodes of this? its all on youtube. it hits a little extra good to see a glimpse of the lives we live here in ny now inside this exaggerated (cartoon!) cartoon from 1999. but the voice acting is awesome and i love the visual style. shame it didnt get more than 1 season.
music
yt's been serving up some sick recos for me recently. dj sets and random full albums. been on a big trance and nitecore kick over the last few weeks. working on a hyperpop / indietronica / nitecore / trance mix rlly excited.
daymoon playlist - Hyperflip: The Secret Potion for Music Obsessed: love this mix, getting a lot of azikazin magic world vibes
Etherself - It's 2008 and you're listening to anime techno/trance on the family computer: i kinda think this type of mix title is played out but it does serve her purpose. this is so nostalgic young me internet time. put it on 240p for maximum effect.
GhostyMsc - help! I’m stuck in 2007 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ late 2000s & early 2010s nightcore playlist ᵎᵎ : just need more.. god is a girl.
rapid fire, a some tracks which rabbit-holed me in order:
DJ Melodie - What You Need this one ended up with me on https://kunaki.com and buying 3 trance albums, DJ Melodie - Neo Beatz and Misty Clouds, and DJ Extacy Fusion (Vocal Trance Mix). had to buy a cd player too.. but now we're sooo up.

change up time. also been listening to a lot of dub reggae.
- Yabby You - King Tubby's Prophesy Of Dub
- SoundGuy Bill - Rare Rub A Dub & Early Dancehall Vinyl Selection
and randomly, the soundtrack from a favorite movie of mine: A Scene At the Sea. 久石譲 – あの夏、いちばん静かな海, 1991 (Album)
